We’ve been slogging it out in Olympics since 1924 and have not won a single gold medal—until now, in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, a long-sought after victory in the time of a pandemic, and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz delivered the glory to us.

Diaz, 30, captured the gold in the women’s 55 kilograms weightlifting competition, and in the process setting an Olympic record in the clean and jerk by lifting 127 kg.

This has been Diaz’s fourth Olympics appearance. In Rio 2016 she won silver, setting her date with destiny and the Olympic gold.

Congratulations Hidilyn Diaz, you have made history.
