Bakit ngayon lang nag-viral to?!

This is exactly the kind of song that will be our contribution to saving the world! Well, if the world were to know exactly what it’s about. On the surface, it’s about a guy who blows his money in the sabungan, but in essence it’s a song that will put a smile on everybody’s faces, with a little bit of life’s lessons thrown in for good measure. We’re sure you’ve heard of it. If not, here it is—presenting, “Manok Na Pula”, enjoy it:

Apparently, this song has already been around since last year—at least if we go by YouTube’s algorithms, which say that the earliest upload of the song was by a guy named Vic Desucatan, a YT creator whose online schtick is to parody English songs into Visayan and Tagalog. We are still confirming if he is the OG creator of the parody. Here is a sample of his other works:

“Manok na Pula” is a parody of one quite old cheesy love song by a singer named Anne Murray, called “Just Another Woman in Love.” This is the kind of song your Tita Bhaby would sing at videoke when she’s had one too many tagays of gin after a losing streak in mahjong with the amigas:

You know what we really love about "Manok na Pula"? It’s the killer lyrics on the killer chorus hook:

Nagsimula ang salpukan manok na pula

biglang tinamaan nag geywang-geywang

sa isang iglap lang ako’y kinabahan

Hindi nakatayo, patay napurohan

Ang perang hulog sa Palawan

tinalo ko sa sabungan

What do you say? Killer! By the way, Palawan doesn’t refer to the province, it’s a pawnshop.

We’re not sure if Palawan is already part of Pinoy pop culture or if it was chosen because it rhymes with “sabungan”, but M. Lhuillier sure doesn’t.

“Manok na Pula” is yet another addition to a growing list of well-crafted parodies our local artists have been dishing ever since we’ve had a recording industry, really—from Dolphy and Panchito to Michael V.

A Wacky History Of Pinoy Song Parodies Part 2

It’s songs like these that’s probably one of the reasons we consistently rank high on happiness indexes despite the claim that we have one of the most hellish living conditions in the world. Yan tayo e.

Why do we need more hit songs like this? From the looks of it the world is not going to get any better anytime soon. Social media is toxic. The environment is being destroyed. We apparently have a transport crisis. We have to take pictures of food before we eat them. We need a shot of gin and kalokohan, and gin while singing Manok na Pula” will do the job quite effectively.

Except for one downside: Narinig namin sa isang umpukan sa tindahan na may namatay na raw sa videoke dahil sa “Manok Na Pula.” Are we seeing a new version of the “My Way” killings? Oh well, so much for bringing happiness to the world.
