Note: Previously, we had a Girl Confessional where said girl poured her frustrations over her athlete-boyfriend for not being around most of the time. Surprise, surprise! Athlete-in-trouble now takes time out to explain to her in writing. Get some chips out, people, this is going to be fun!

As an athlete, I’m well aware that my time is always limited. In fact, I spend more time with the ball than with my family and friends. However, this is not an excuse for me to be a lousy perfect lover. I may lack the time but when given the opportunity, I never lack in effort.

You’re not my priority… for now.

I know how needy a girlfriend can be and it’s her boyfriend’s duty to keep her happy but I can’t put you on top of all the things that I have to do. Before I can spend time talking with you, I want to finish all my schoolwork first so I won’t have to worry about them when it’s time for you. That time that my training was extended? I wanted to see you more than you know but I had no other choice. You have no idea how distracted I was thinking about you getting mad at me. I am more nervous about facing your anger than facing our opponents!

Time with me is worth its golden price

“It’s worth the wait”—you should definitely make this your favorite phrase. I’ve waited for you to love me before, I’m hoping that you can wait for me to give you what you neednow. I know that you hate the sort-of LDR situation (that’s why you would never date guys who work in ships) but whenever I have the chance to get out of prison, I always make it worth the gold you spend.

No conversations, just sweet long messages

I might just send you two to five messages per day and we might not be able to have a continuous conversation but I always make sure to pour all my feelings in those two or so messages. I never forget to send you at least one long and sweet message hoping that it’ll keep you running all day. Would you prefer us having a conversation but all my replies are brief and lifeless? I can choose to stay up late at night to talk to you but I don’t want you to have dark bags under your eyes. You need your beauty rest.

They’re just fans, you’re my girl

“Mag-bo-boyfriend boyfriend ka ng atleta tapos magagalit ka kapag may lumalapit sa kanya.” — your mom

We’ve been through this topic for probably more than a hundred times now and even though two years has already passed, this is still an issue. Having fans is part of the deal I guess of being a varsity athlete, you know, the popularity (plus the fact that I’m good-looking. Kidding!). I can’t be at fault if some of them want more. I might thank some of them for the support they’re giving me but I never go beyond that. There’s nothing to worry about, you’re still my number one fan.

Better late than never

Last Valentine’s was pure luck. I’m always hoping that V-Day falls on a weekend so that I can spend some time with you. Okay, so last year I had to postpone, I’m sorry. I might not be able to give you a surprise exactly on that day but at least I make it happen ten or so days later. At least di ba?

According to his girlfriend Sophia, John Carlos Madrigalejos, 21, is your charming and popular varsity guy straight out of fiction books. He’s been a volleyball player since the age of 11. He’s now a senior playing for the UP Fighting Maroons as their libero.
